Berhampur: Allaying the perception that the body of a person who dies of COVID-19 would spread coronavirus on contact, Ganjam CDMO has said a dead body cannot spread the virus.
The CDMO Dr Uma Shankar Mishra said only a COVID-19 patient can transmit the virus to an unaffected person. The coronavirus cannot transmit from a dead body to a living being, he added.
He further clarified that the secretion of body fluid can infect a healthy person. For this reason, a dead body is delivered to the family in a protective cover so that the secretion does not infect others.
Dispelling the fear of some people that they may contract coronavirus by touching the bodies of COVID-19 victims, the CDMO said it is unfounded and unscientific.
Dr Mishra’s opinion holds significance in the light of several instances of people denying to carry the bodies of COVID-19 victims to cremation ground reported from the district.
