Cuttack/Bhubaneswar: Doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital here successfully conducted cadaveric kidney transplants on two patients on Thursday.

The deceased donor, Rajalaxmi Das, was grievously injured in a road accident recently and admitted to Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital in Bhubaneswar. Doctors had declared her brain dead on Wednesday. She was a resident of Delang in Puri district.

Following her demise, Rajalaxmi’s family contacted the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) and expressed their desire to donate the kidneys of the deceased.

Then SOTTO named two recipients of the kidneys and a team of doctors began the process to remove them.

Later, the kidneys were taken to SCB where the doctors successfully conducted the transplant on Ritarani Mohanta of Mayurbhanj district and Ratnakar Mohanty of Kamakhyanagar in Dhenkanal district.

Notably, Odisha’s first cadaveric organ transplant was successfully conducted at SCB in Cuttack on February 4. The kidney of 26-year-old donor Priyankarani Patra of Digapahandi in Ganjam district was transplanted on Khirod Sahoo after a three-hour-long surgery.

The second cadaveric kidney transplant was successfully conducted at Apollo Hospitals and AMRI Hospital in Bhubaneswar on February 26. The lives of two patients were saved after the family of deceased Suchitra Dash (56) from Cuttack agreed to donate her kidneys. She had met with a road accident on February 23 and declared brain dead by doctors at Apollo Hospitals on February 26.
