Bhubaneswar: The state government has noticed a disturbing trend. Many automobile dealers in Odisha are flouting a statute to provide protective headgear (helmet) to a two-wheeler buyer at the time of sale.
The statute also says that the helmet should confirm to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications.
On the other hand, Transport Department officials complained that some two-wheeler riders are found driving without a helmet or wearing a substandard headgear.
Concerned over this breach to road safety, the State Transport Authority (STA) has made it mandatory for automobile dealers to give BIS-marked helmets to two-wheeler buyers.
According to a circular issued by Transport Commissioner Arun Bothra on Friday, the RTOs will ensure that all dealers (including e-vehicle dealers) in their respective areas follow the rule.
Besides, the dealers will have to display conspicuous signboards at their showrooms to create public awareness about claiming a helmet while buying a two-wheeler.
Even, transport officials will also make people aware about the rule.
