Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped a private engineering college at Madanpur under the Infovalley police limits in Bhubaneswar after a first-year BTech student was found hanging in his hostel room last night.
The deceased has been identified as Satya Sarathi of Bhadrak district.
According to police sources, the student was found hanging inside his hostel room, which was locked from inside. Though preliminary investigation suggests suicide, the body has been sent to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar to determine the cause of death.
The incident triggered massive unrest on the campus as the students went on a rampage, alleging that Satya took the extreme step due to ragging by senior students. They damaged college property and staged protests outside the campus, accusing the college authorities of negligence and cover-up.
While police have been deployed on the campus to maintain law and order and Satya’s parents informed about his death, no comments could be obtained from the college authorities on the matter.
