Bhubaneswar: The death toll of Odia workers in the ammonia gas leak mishap in Tamil Nadu has gone up to 15 with the death of another worker during treatment.
The deceased has been identified as Rohini Juanga, a 23-year-old woman from Harichandanpur block in Kendujhar district. She had been seriously ill since the gas leak incident and was undergoing treatment.
Of the 15 Odia workers who died in the gas tragedy, 14 victims are from Kendujhar district alone, while one is from Palalahada in Anugola district.
As Rohini’s body was brought to her village, an atmosphere of grief gripped the area. Family members were inconsolable as the entire village mourned the loss of the young worker.
The Odisha government said it is closely monitoring the situation following the accident. All possible assistance is being provided to the affected families and steps are being taken for the treatment and safety of workers who are still under treatment.
It may be noted that the mishap occurred on June 21 at a private seafood processing and export unit in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.
Around 120 migrant workers from Odisha, Assam and Jharkhand were on duty when ammonia gas leaked inside the factory. The workers were exposed to toxic fumes, triggering breathing difficulties, dizziness and severe eye irritation.
