New Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) will convene a General Body Meeting on May 7, to discuss the issue of elevation of Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph.
The Supreme Court Collegium had met early this week to discuss the issue after the Centre rejected the elevation of KM Joseph to Supreme Court. However, a decision was not taken as the Collegium couldn’t reach a consensus.
The SCBA will also discuss the removal of SCBA President Vikas Singh from office.
Only May 2, the five-member Collegium, including Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph, had deferred the decision.
In January this year, the Collegium had recommended names of Justice Joseph and Indu Malhotra for elevation to the apex court. Though the Centre had cleared Justice Indu’s name, it had asked the Collegium to reconsider his name, which had caused a political furore, with many in opposition and legal fraternity stating that the stay on Justice Joseph’s appointment was the fallout of his decision to reject President’s rule in Uttarakhand in 2016.
