Bhubaneswar: A deep depression has formed over Northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.

“The depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts moved nearly northwards with a speed of 20 kmph during past 3 hours and intensified into a deep depression, about 60 km southeast of Sagar Island, 110 km east-southeast of Digha, 160 km east of Balasore, 180 km south-southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh) and 180 km west of Khepupara (Bangladesh),” according to the midday bulletin.

It further stated that the system is likely to continue to move nearly northwards and cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara (Bangladesh) by afternoon. “Most of the models are indicating northwards movement of the system and crossing over Bangladesh-West Bengal coasts during 0600-0900 UTC,” it added.

Under its influence, Odisha may continue to experience heavy to very heavy rain for two days.

Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj and Jagatsinghpur districts.

Yellow warning

Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy rainfall is also likely at one or two places in Kandhamal, Puri, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Nuapada, Balangir, Keonjhar and Jajpur.

Thunderstorm/lightning with surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Angul, Deogarh, Boudh, Bargarh, and Malkangiri.

Thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy rainfall may continue at one or two places in Kalahandi, Nuapada, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Nabarangpur.

Thunderstorm/lightning with surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Balangir, Boudh, Bargarh, Kandhamal, Puri, Nayagarh, Khurda, Ganjam, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal and Gajapati.

Wind, Sea & Port Warnings

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may prevail along and off Odisha coast till May 30.

Sea conditions are likely to be rough to very rough over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts till May 30. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts during this period.

All ports have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No-III (LC-3).

The weather agency further stated that thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on May 31.

There will be no large change in the day temperature during the next 3 days, it added.

The Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA Deemed to be University had earlier said that there might be a dry period accompanied by rise in temperature between June 1 and 3 after which the rainfall is expected to increase with southwest monsoon covering more areas in the state.
