Bhubaneswar: The depression over Bangladesh intensified into a deep depression after crossing the coast and moved west-northwestwards, triggering heavy rain and strong winds, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

The system had moved west-northwestwards and crossed Bangladesh coast close to Patuakhali in Bangladesh.

The deep depression now lay centred over Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, approximately 90 km northeast of Canning and 100 km east-northeast of Kolkata.

As per IMD, the system has been moving at 23 kmph over the past six hours and is expected to continue its west-northwestward trajectory, maintaining its intensity until this evening.

Thereafter, it will likely weaken into a depression as it moves across Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand over the next 48 hours.

The IMD is closely monitoring the situation through the Doppler Weather Radar at Kolkata, ensuring timely updates and warnings to affected areas. Residents in the region are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

Under its influence, several parts of Odisha are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rain till the morning of September 16.

Issuing a red warning, the weather agency said isolated heavy to very heavy falls (7 to 20cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) accompanied by thunderstorm with lightning may occur at isolated places in Mayurbhanj district on Saturday.

Similarly, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) along with thunderstorm and lightning is also likely at isolated places in Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak districts where orange warning war issued.

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning may continue at isolated places in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Sundargarh,Deogarh, Angul and Dhenkanal.
Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Sambalpur, Bargarh and Jharsuguda.

On Sunday, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may continue at isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh and Sundargarh districts.

Due to strong monsoon current, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph very likely from September 13-15 over North Bay of Bengal, along and off North Odisha coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into North Bay of Bengal; along and off North Odisha coast during this period.

In view of the heavy rain forecast by IMD, Mayurbhanj district administration in Odisha has announced that all schools would remain closed on Saturday.

The district education officer (DEO) said the district collector has directed to keep all schools including private ones closed on September 14 due to rain forecast.
