New Delhi: A night outing at the busy and happening Connaught Place, in the heart of India’s Capital, turned fatal for a 36-year-old businessman.

More than two weeks after being assaulted by three food delivery agents, Shivam Gupta succumbed to his injuries at a hospital recently.

The police are checking CCTV footage of the area, and have taken Gupta’s blood-stained clothes for forensics work. A case has been filed.

Police have arrested two persons, and are looking for the third accused.

Police are checking CCTV footage of the area, and have taken Shivam’s blood-stained clothes for forensics work.

A resident of east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar, Shivam had gone to Connaught Place with a friend on January 2 to attend a party. On coming out of the restaurant, he asked a delivery agent for some water near E Block, close to Rajiv Chowk Metro station, PTI reported.

A verbal spat ensued, and the argument led to a violent altercation, according to police. The businessman, an only child, was allegedly punched, kicked and beaten repeatedly on the head with helmets by three food delivery agents.

As a severely battered Shivam bled profusely on the pavement, the delivery agents fled the scene.

Police, on receiving a call around 1.30 am on January 3, reached the spot and rushed Shivam to the nearby Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital.

Doctors found multiple haematoma and declared him unfit to give a statement.

According to his father Anil Kant Gupta, Shivam was shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on January 4, and underwent surgery on January 5.

“The doctors clearly told us that the injuries were life-threatening and an immediate operation was necessary. After the procedure, we were informed that the next 36 to 72 hours would be crucial for recovery.

“For a while, he showed signs of improvement. He was responding to the doctors when they called out to him. We had hope. But he left us on January 19,” PTI quoted Gupta as saying.
