New Delhi: A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on Richter scale hit hit the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region and the Hindu Kush area around 9.45 pm on Friday. Tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR and several parts of north India, triggering panic among residents who rushed out of homes and office buildings.
Residents of Delhi and its adjoining areas were enjoying a cool evening, thanks to heavy showers after a severe dust storm when they were shaken up by tremors.
Residents in highrise buildings said the tremors lasted a few seconds, with many taking to social media to share images of household items moving and shaking.

Tremors were also reported from Noida, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Poonch, Srinagar and Udhampur.
No major damage or casualties have been reported so far.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at a significant depth, with estimates ranging up to around 177 km. That explains why tremors were felt far off, across northern India.
