Delhi was ranked the most polluted city in the world after it recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 552 on Friday noon.
Two other Indian cities — Kolkata (5th) and Mumbai (9th) — also featured among the top 10 polluted cities, according to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR). While Kolkata had an AQI reading of 161, Mumbai recorded 153.
In the rankings, Lahore in Pakistan stood second with an AQI of 234 and Tashkent was 3rd with an AQI of 185.
According to private weather agency Skymet, pollution in the national capital has broken the record by remaining in the hazardous range for nine consecutive days.
The Delhi government is planning to extend the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme as the air quality is not expected to become better any time soon.
