Bhubaneswar: Dense fog enveloped Odisha capital on Sunday morning, affecting flight operations and vehicular movement due to reduced visibility.
As per sources, flight operations at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar have been disrupted due to foggy conditions. Moderate fog blanketed the airport area in Bhubaneswar in the morning, reducing visibility to around 200 metres.
Over ten flights have been delayed due to poor visibility, causing inconvenience to fliers and crowding the airport complex.
While some flights were reported to have been rescheduled, no cancellation has been reported so far. The delayed services include flights operating to Guwahati, Mumbai, Delhi, and Prayagraj.
Notably, at least three flights were cancelled, and five others delayed at the airport earlier as runway visibility dropped below operational minimums. On Saturday, flights to destinations including Goa, Kolkata, Guwahati, Utkela, Jaipur, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai faced delays ranging from 2 to 2.5 hours.
Apart from Bhubaneswar, several districts of the state including Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, and Nayagarh districts, experienced thick fog on Sunday morning. Jajpur experienced very dense fog with visibility plummeting to less than 50 metres.
The foggy conditions have persisted over recent days, marking a continuation of weather-related challenges in the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange warnings for dense to very dense fog across several Odisha districts, with forecasts suggesting these conditions could linger till January 7 morning.
