Bhubaneswar: The well-marked Low-Pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into Depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Thursday.
“Yesterday’s well-marked low-pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast concentrated into a depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts, about 100 km south-southeast of Sagar Island, 130 km southeast of Digha, 190 km east-northeast of Paradip and 210 km west-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh),” the agency said.
The system is likely to move nearly northwards, intensify further into a deep depression and cross West Bengal–Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara (Bangladesh) by afternoon, it added.
Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph may continue at one or two places if Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj and Jagatsinghpur districts in Odisha.
Thunderstorml/ightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy rainfall may also occur at one or two places in Kandhamal, Puri, Nayagarh, Khurdha, Cuttack, Nuapada, Balangir, Keonjhar and Jajpur.
There is also a warning for thunderstorm/lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for one or two places in Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sudargarh, Angul, Deogarh, Boudh, Bargarh, and Malkangiri.
Squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may prevail along and off Odisha coast till May 30. The sea conditions are likely to remain rough to very rough. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea and along and off Odisha coast during this period.
