Depression Over Bay May Take Shape Of Severe Cyclonic Storm By Tomorrow; Check Heavy Rain & Wind Warning For Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The well-marked Low Pressure concentrated into a Depression over over central Bay of Bengal (BoB) at 5.30 am, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

“It is likely to move northeastwards and intensify further into a cyclone over eastcentral BoB by My 25 morning. Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards, intensify into a severe cyclone by May 25 evening. Continuing to move nearly northward, it is very likely to cross  Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara around May 26 midnight as a severe cyclonic storm.”

If the system develops into a cyclone, it will the first during this pre- monsoon season, and be named Remal, meaning ‘sand’ in Arabic, as suggested by Oman.

According to the morning bulletin, light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over coastal districts of West Bengal and adjoining districts of North Odisha on May 26-27. Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places may also over Mizoram, Tripura and South Manipur during this period.

While light to moderate rain/thundershower is likely to lash north and south Odisha from May 25 under its influence, yellow warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) has been issued for isolated places in Balasore on May 26. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may also occur at isolated places in Bhadrak and Kendrapada.

On May 27, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely at isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak districts.

Wind Warning

It would become 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over central Bay of Bengal on May 24 and extend to adjoining areas of North Bay of Bengal with gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph from May 25 morning. It would further increase becoming 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph over north Bay of Bengal and 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph over adjoining central Bay of Bengal from May 26 morning for subsequent 24 hours.

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely along & off Bangladesh, West Bengal and adjoining North Odisha coasts from May 25 evening. Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over Andaman Islands and North Andaman Sea on May 24.

Sea Condition

Sea condition is likely to be Rough to very rough over North Bay of Bengal from May 24 evening. It would become high over central Bay of Bengal from May 25 morning and high to very high over North Bay of Bengal from May 25 evening till May 27 morning.

Rough to very rough along & off Bangladesh, West Bengal and adjoining North Odisha coasts from May 25 evening and high along & off Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts from May 26 noon till May 27 morning.

Rough to very rough over Andaman Islands and North Andaman Sea on May 24.

Fishermen Warning

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into south Bay of Bengal till May 24, central Bay of Bengal till May 26 and North Bay of Bengal from May 24 till morning of May 27.
