Bhubaneswar: The low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea has now transformed into a well-marked low-pressure area, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Wednesday
While issuing a warning regarding the developing system, the weather agency further said that it is expected to move in a west-northwest direction and gradually intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 30. It is anticipated to move northwestwards and gain further strength, evolving into cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal during next 48 hours.
Weather officials have asserted that the exact path of the system will be known once it intensifies into a depression.
While the agency is yet to issue any weather warning for Odisha, the office of state Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea with squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over adjoining central Bay of Bengal on December 1 and increasing to 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph on December 2. Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph is likely over southwest Bay of Bengal on December 2.
As sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough, fishermen have been advised to return to coast by December 1 morning.
In view of the anticipated rainfall under the influence of the system, the SRC has also asked the Agriculture Department to take appropriate preventive steps to save paddy and other crops.
If the system intensify into a cyclone, it will be called Michaung, a name suggested by Myanmar. It will be the sixth such event forming in the Indian Ocean this year, compared to the customary four cyclones that occur in most years, and the fourth in the Bay of Bengal.
