Bhubaneswar: Another cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over eastcentral Bay of Bengal from October 28 and November 3, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its North Indian Ocean Extended Range Outlook for Cyclogenesis.
“Various extended range models are also indicating the likely formation of another cyclonic circulation over eastcentral BoB during week 2 with a low probability of its intensification into a depression,” it said.
Meanwhile, the low-pressure area over north Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood is expected to move westnorthwestwards and concentrate into a depression over eastcentral and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal around October 22 and into a deep depression the following day.

“Subsequently, it is very likely to recurve northwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm over westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal by October 24. Thereafter, it is likely to move gradually north-northeastwards and reach near West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts on October 25,” the report further said.
“Landfall is indicated over West Bengal-Bangladesh coast (ECMWF over West Bengal- Bangladesh border around 26th/0600 UTC, GFS over West Bengal coast around 26th/ 0300-0600 UTC, NCUM over West Bengal- Bangladesh border around 24th/2100 UTC, NCEP GFS over Bangladesh coast around 25th/0000 UTC),” it added.
This system will be named ‘Sitrang’, if it intensifies into a cyclonic storm.
While Odisha may well be spared by this cyclone brewing in the Bay of Bengal, the state will receive heavy rainfall from Monday onwards under influence of this season’s second tropical storm. Heavy showers will continue from Monday to Wednesday, said IMD, Bhubaneswar, Director HR Biswas.
