Bhubaneswar: The depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal crossed the Odisha coast on Saturday and is expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area in next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The system crossed the south Odisha coast close to Gopalpur around 4.30 am and is currently centred over south coastal Odisha.
The depression is currently centred near latitude 19.3°N and longitude 84.8°E. In terms of geographical location, it is situated about 10 km west-northwest of Gopalpur. It is approximately 120 km west-southwest of Puri, about 40 km south-southeast of Phulbani and 180 km east-southeast of Bhawanipatna.
The system is very likely to continue to move nearly westwards across south Odisha & Chhattisgarh and weaken gradually into a well-marked low pressure area during next 24 hours.
Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rain pounded several parts of Odisha, particularly in southern districts, since Friday. Rainfall is likely to continue in the state for at least one day.
