Bhubaneswar: Dhanteras is a significant occasion celebrated two days prior to the biggest Hindu festival Diwali.
People, in huge numbers, purchase gold and silver jewellery and utensils on this day as it is believed that buying these precious metals on Dhanteras makes a person prosperous and brings them more wealth.
Generally, iron and steel are avoided and utensils made of copper, silver, brass, or gold are preferred on Dhanteras. It is believed that purchasing utensils brings wealth and prosperity to the household.
Apart from gold and silver items, the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh are also brought home on this day, followed by their worship on Diwali.
The price of gold for 10g of 22 Carat is approximately Rs 47,700 and for 10g of 24 Carat is Rs Rs 50,090 in Bhubaneswar. The silver price for 1 gm of silver costs Rs 63.20 in the capital city.
Likewise, the rate of the yellow metal for 10g of 22 Carat and 24 Carat is at the same rate in Cuttack whereas 1 gm of silver costs Rs 61.50.

- Ensure cleaning the house believing that Goddess Lakshmi does not step into untidy and unkempt homes.
- Perform Lakshmi Puja in the evening.
