Bhubaneswar: A team of doctors at KIMS Cancer Centre, led by Senior Surgical Oncologist Dr Sabyasachi Parida, successfully operated on a young man with an unusually large left-sided diaphragmatic tumour.

The diaphragm, a crucial muscular partition separating the chest from the abdomen, underwent meticulous surgery for the massive tumour, measuring approximately 24×17 cm and weighing over 2 kg.

The tumour, which hindered the patient’s ability to consume solid food, presented unique challenges to the medical team.

The surgical team — consisting of consultant anaesthetist Dr Monika Dabgotra, OT technician Bibhas Prasad Barik, Senior OT sister Kalpana Ojha, senior OT support staff Mikina Pradhan, nursing officers and other dedicated staff — demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork to conduct the procedure in six hours, a KIIT press release said.

Accessing such tumours generally requires invasive procedures, including opening the abdomen and chest, which causes considerable discomfort for patients. However, Dr Parida’s opted for an innovative approach to avoid a chest incision or a chest drain, thereby reducing post-operative pain and enhancing patient’s recovery process.

Utilising state-of-the-art equipment and modern modular operating theatres at KIMS Cancer Centre, Dr Parida’s team executed a meticulous dissection, without any intra-operative complication or blood transfusion.

After excision of the tumour, the team reconstructed the large diaphragmatic defect.

The patient woke up comfortably on the operating table itself and recovered swiftly, without the need for intensive care or respiratory support.

“This surgery underscores our commitment to innovative and patient-centred care. By leveraging advanced techniques and collaborative expertise, we can tackle even the most challenging cases with precision and compassion,” said Dr Parida.
