Several doctors and health workers engaged in treating COVID-19 patients have fallen sick, and even died, despite being fully vaccinated.
New York Times reported that at least 20 doctors, who were administered both doses of the Chinese vaccine Sinovac, have died in Indonesia.
The report quoted Indonesian Medical Association as saying that the vaccination status of 31 others who passed away over the last five months is being looked into.
As many as 358 medical workers, who had been fully vaccinated with Sinovac, have tested positive for COVID-19 during a two-week span in the town of Kudus in Java, the report stated.
In June, a frontline medical worker, two nurses and a nutritionist have passed away after receiving two doses of Sinovac.
A trial had been carried out earlier among Indonesia’s health workers which indicated Sinovac was quite effective in preventing hospitalization in serious condition and death from COVID-19.
However, the Chinese vaccine’s effect on the recent Delta variant is not well known.
Most of the 5% of Indonesia’s total population who have been vaccinated till date received Sinovac.
Some other countries like Mongolia, Seychelles and Bahrain, which had reposed faith on easily accessible Chinese vaccines, are also battling a surge in coronavirus cases.
