Bhubaneswar: After active southwest monsoon conditions triggered heavy downpours across several parts of interior Odisha, rainfall activity is expected to see a brief lull before intensifying again toward the end of the week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Meanwhile, the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas has moved to Jharkhand and its neighbourhood and is expected to move nearly west-northwestwards during the next 24 hours. Over the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Tuesday, Barkote in Debagada recorded the state’s highest rainfall at 16 cm, followed by Jujumura in Sambalpur (12 cm) and Chandrapur in Rayagada (11 cm).

Short Relief

The weather department indicates a noticeable drop in overall rainfall intensity across Odisha over the next two days.

August 25: Heavy rainfall may continue at one or two place in the districts of Sundaragada,
Jharsuguda, Baragada and Sambalpur.

August 26: Intensity drops sharply across the state, with no weather warnings issued and light to moderate rainfall expected at only a few places.

August 27: Isolated heavy rain resumes in Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj, alongside thunderstorms and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) in coastal and northern districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.

Fresh rain spell

Rainfall activity will pick up significantly from August 28 as monsoon conditions re-energize.

August 28-29: An Orange Warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj, expanding to Baleshwar and Sundargada on August 29. Heavy rainfall may also occur in central and coastal districts including Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Kataka, Sundaragada, Anugola and Dhenkanal on August 28; and Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Subarnapur, Boudh, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada on August 29.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) may also occur at one or two places over the districts of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, Nayagada.

August 30: Heavy to very heavy rainfall may persist in Sundaragada, Debagada, Anugola, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj. Heavy rainfall may also occur in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Dhenkanal, Sonpur, Boudh, Balangir and Nayagada.

August 31: Heavy rain may continue to lash districts of Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur and Debagada.

Advisory and Expected Impact

The IMD has warned of flooding, waterlogging in low-lying urban areas, disrupted traffic, and potential minor damage to vulnerable structures or standing crops during periods of heavy rain. Residents in alert zones are advised to track traffic updates and avoid waterlogged areas.
