Bhubaneswar: In the wake of nationwide strike by India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) Association, all medicine shops in Odisha will remain closed on September 28.

Utkal Chemist and Druggist Association has decided to close all medicine stores from the midnight of September 27 to midnight of September 28 in protest against the proposed changes in the Drug Act and the move to bring in online pharmacies.

As many as 26,000 chemists will participate in the strike.

General secretary of the association Prashant Mohapatra informed that around 4,000 medicine wholesale points and 22,000 retail shops in Odisha will down shutters on September 28.

“The e-pharmacy could open doors for illegal drugs. Medicines cannot reach people properly through online purchase and one also cannot check their quality,.” said members of the association.

“The e-pharmacy would also impact the livelihood of lakhs of chemists’ families. The employees of medicine shops will also be affected,” they added.
