Bhopal: A sex and religious conversion racket, run by a gang led by two sisters, has been unearthed in Bhopal.
Afreen and Amreen, the sisters, have been arrested, while three others are on the run.
It took separate complaints by two women for police to get into the act. The cops were approached by a 21-year-old woman beautician from Chhattisgarh and a 30-year-old lady from Bhopal, with similar stories — lured with the promise of jobs, then drugged, raped and forced to convert.
The gang targeted girls from economically weaker backgrounds, and earned their trust by promising them jobs before sexually exploiting them.
The beautician, in fact, had shared a room with Amreen. She said in her complaint that in November, Amreen took her to Abbas Nagar in Bhopal to meet her relatives.
There, she claimed that Amreen’s brother Bilal mixed an intoxicant in her tea and raped her while she was unconscious.
She didn’t protest then, and was taken to Ahmedabad by Amreen in December, on the pretext of personal work. She was then introduced to a man named Yasir, who also allegedly raped her. The Chhattisgarh claimed that even Chandan Yadav, a close aide of Amreen, sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions between August 2025 and January 2026.
According to the rape survivor, she was threatened when she tried to resist, and blackmailed with photos taken in compromising positions.
The ordeal continued, and over the next few weeks, she was forced to wear revealing and short clothes and taken to pubs to interact with affluent men.
The beautician claimed she was forced to consume drugs in pubs, and was sexually assaulted on several occasions.
She revealed she was also forced to change her religion and made to wear a burqa.
Ultimately, she managed to escape Amreen and the others’ clutches in January, and went to Chhattisgarh to stay with her maternal uncle. She recently returned to Bhopal and lodged a complaint at Bagsewania police station on February 22.
Police started a probe, when another woman, who worked as a domestic help at Amreen’s house, lodged a similar complaint. The domestic help, a local woman, also alleged that she was drugged and gangraped by Yasir, Bilal and Chandan. She even provided police video evidence.
Cases have been registered against the two sisters and three men under relevant sections related to rape, criminal conspiracy, and forced religious conversion.
The sisters apparently lived in a lavish flat in upscale Sagar Royal Villas colony in Bhopal’s Hoshangabad area.
Neighbours told India Today that Afreen and Amreen’s activities had raised suspicion earlier also as men and young boys would frequently visit their flat late at night.
According to the residents, several burqa-clad women were often seen visiting the flat, while Afreen and Amreen wore jeans.
Hindu outfits have been protesting against the sex and conversion racket. Hindu Utsav Samiti president Chandrashekhar Tiwari has said awareness campaigns for women and young girls will be launched in Bhopal.
