Hyderabad: A man, allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, dragged a police sub-inspector on the bonnet of his car for nearly half a kilometre, injuring three civilians in the process.
According to the police, the man was attempting to flee a police checkpoint, set up to apprehend drunk drivers. The incident occurred on Sunday night under the limits of Yacharam police station in Rangareddy district.
Yacharam police station sub-inspector Madhu was conducting drunk-driving inspections near the bus stand in Yacharam town when a speeding car approached the checkpoint. Despite being signaled to stop, the driver ignored the police instructions and attempted to flee.
SI Madhu apparently jumped onto the bonnet of the car in a bid to stop it. However, the driver continued to speed away without stopping, dragging the officer for nearly 500 metres.
While fleeing, the driver rammed into a two-wheeler carrying Venkat Reddy, his daughter-in-law Divya, and their one-year-old grandson, all residents of Yacharam. The collision threw them onto the road.
Divya suffered a fracture to her arm, while Reddy and the infant sustained minor injuries. All the injured were shifted to a hospital for treatment.
The car’s speed dropped momentarily after crossing Yacharam town, allowing SI Madhu to jump off the vehicle to save himself. He sustained minor injuries in the incident.
The police intercepted the car later near Khanapur, close to Ibrahimpatnam, and took the driver into custody. The accused was identified as Srikar, a resident of Koheda. A breath analyser test confirmed that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Another person, Nithin, from Hayathnagar, was present in the car at the time of the incident, the police said.
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections for rash driving, causing hurt, and obstructing a public servant from discharging duty.
