Bhubaneswar: Google Doodle said it loud, ‘I am Hopeful’ about the future while doing my bit to save life on Earth even as British primatologist and anthropologist Dr Jane Goodall spoke about the importance of sustaining our environment. As the world celebrated Earth Day on Sunday, Twitterati too went gung ho with messages to save the beautiful planet. This year’s theme focuses on ending plastic pollution.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also had a message for the world. Calling Earth as the only home, he urged people to curb the use of plastic and polythene.

Cleanliness drives, rallies and public meetings were held in different places in the state on the occasion of Earth Day to create awareness about the nuisance of plastic waste. Internationally famed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik too has created a 3D sculpture on Puri beach with a message, ‘Stop Pollution, Save Earth’.

The gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that the rising sea level at Satabhya village in Odisha’s Kendrapada district recently led to relocation of a temple. While only married Dalit women from the local fishing community have exclusive privilege of performing rituals in Ma Panchubarahi, men had to engaged to transport the heavy black stone idols from the temple, a couple of days back, breaking an age-old tradition.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the effort of individuals who are working towards sustainable development.

Bollywood celebrities too expressed concern over plastic addiction destroying wildlife and nature. Some stressed responsible disposal of plastic waste.

Propagating the five Rs of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Restore and Replenish, a tweet questioned if we had an alternative planet to live in.

The beauty of nature and its abundance also found mention in the tweets.
