Bhubaneswar: Google Doodle said it loud, ‘I am Hopeful’ about the future while doing my bit to save life on Earth even as British primatologist and anthropologist Dr Jane Goodall spoke about the importance of sustaining our environment. As the world celebrated Earth Day on Sunday, Twitterati too went gung ho with messages to save the beautiful planet. This year’s theme focuses on ending plastic pollution.

“It is so important in the world today that we feel hopeful and do our part to protect life on Earth. I am hopeful that this Earth Day Google Doodle will live as a reminder for people across the globe that there is still so much in th… pic.twitter.com/GXf8F9OdpF

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also had a message for the world. Calling Earth as the only home, he urged people to curb the use of plastic and polythene.

We have only one Earth, our only home. It is our responsibility to take care of our home, protect & keep it healthy for future generations. On #EarthDay with focus on #EndPlasticPollution, urge all to curb use of plastics & polythene in daily life for well-being of mother Earth pic.twitter.com/prONsTx9NA

Cleanliness drives, rallies and public meetings were held in different places in the state on the occasion of Earth Day to create awareness about the nuisance of plastic waste. Internationally famed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik too has created a 3D sculpture on Puri beach with a message, ‘Stop Pollution, Save Earth’.

The gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that the rising sea level at Satabhya village in Odisha’s Kendrapada district recently led to relocation of a temple. While only married Dalit women from the local fishing community have exclusive privilege of performing rituals in Ma Panchubarahi, men had to engaged to transport the heavy black stone idols from the temple, a couple of days back, breaking an age-old tradition.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the effort of individuals who are working towards sustainable development.

I compliment all those individuals and organisations who are working towards promoting harmony with nature and ensuring sustainable development. #EarthDay

— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) April 22, 2018

Bollywood celebrities too expressed concern over plastic addiction destroying wildlife and nature. Some stressed responsible disposal of plastic waste.

#Responsible_disposal_of_plastic is the only solution not a complete #banonplastic which is not feasible. Paradoxically Plastics recycling is on the negative list in #Odisha #IPR. Needs correction & promotion this #Earth_Day @makeinodisha1 @MsmeDepartment @InvestInOdisha pic.twitter.com/hQ4sn5lKE1

Propagating the five Rs of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Restore and Replenish, a tweet questioned if we had an alternative planet to live in.

Do anyone has an alternate planet to live??? Those who don’t have a choice let’s pledge on #EarthDay to#endPlastic Pollution, avoid, reuse. @bmcbbsr @swachhbharat @wash_institute @sudarsansand @PMOIndia @Naveen_Odisha Modi lauded the effort of individuals who are working towards sustainable development.@SavarkarYouth @aniy_arora @UN_Women @WorldBankIndia pic.twitter.com/oH6GtetusR

— Panda Lopamudra (@PLopamudra) April 22, 2018

The beauty of nature and its abundance also found mention in the tweets.

On the occassion of the #EarthDay let’s remember that our planet is safe & beautiful because of #nature #earthday2018 #Odisha pic.twitter.com/TZalsMdG6n
