New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on Richter scale struck near the coast of central Peru on Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.
The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), EMSC added.
Details are awaited on any possible damage caused by the earthquake.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in this South American country as it lies in the seismic zone.
However, this is the first major tremor to have hit Peru.
In 2022, Peru experienced six big earthquakes, including one of 7.5 magnitude.
