Educational Institutes Can Prescribe Uniforms, Hijab Is Different, Observes SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court observed on Thursday that that educational institutes have the power to prescribe uniforms, but hijab is different, reported ANI.

A bench comprising Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia has been hearing a batch of petitions challenging the ban on wearing hijab in schools and colleges.

In its judgment on March 15 this year, the Karnataka High Court upheld the ban issued by the state government, stating that wearing hijab does not qualify as an essential religious practice and the ban does not violate the freedom of speech and expression.

A number of petitions were filed in the apex court on behalf of Muslim female students, challenging the high court order.

Then-CJI NV Raman agreed to take up the petitions in due course of time.
