Kolkata: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has imposed a complete ban on victory rallies and celebratory processions across West Bengal on the day of the result announcement, reinforcing its push to maintain peace and avert post‑poll unrest.

A senior official of the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office has made it clear that no rallies celebrating the victory of any candidate will be allowed anywhere in the state on Monday, the day counting is underway for the 2026 assembly polls. The directive applies to all constituencies, political parties and their supporters, effectively shutting down mass street celebrations, motorcades and spontaneous processions that typically follow the announcement of results.

The decision comes in the context of past episodes of post‑poll violence and clashes in West Bengal, which have repeatedly triggered criticism over the management of victory processions and large‑scale mobilisations.

The poll panel is also looking into reports that agents of various parties at certain counting centres allegedly faced trouble reaching the venues, raising questions about transparency and equal access. Senior officials, including special observer Subrata Gupta, have acknowledged these complaints and said the issues will be resolved ‘soon’.

The commission has warned that any attempt to obstruct or delay party agents at counting halls will be taken seriously and could invite strict action.

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election was held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting for 293 of the state’s 294 constituencies scheduled for May 4. The Falta seat is being treated separately after the Election Commission ordered a repoll there following complaints of irregularities.
