Nabarangpur: An old woman was trampled to death by a tusker in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district on Sunday night. This is the second case of elephant menace in the district in the last one week.
According to sources, the woman, identified as Asamati Bhatra and her son of Thatabeda village under Jharigaon block, had gone to nearby Jagipadar village to attend a family function on the day. While returning to their village through Bhuruamunda forest at night, they came face to face with the elephant.
While Asamati was trampled to death by the elephant, her son managed to run away and climbed a tree to save himself. After the elephant left the place, he went to the village and informed the family members and villagers.
On being informed, Forest officials went to the village and sent the body for post-mortem.
The Forest officials said the elephant got separated from its herd in Boudh district and came to Nabrangpur through Kalahandi. They along with Wildlife officials had launched an operation to track the elephant for the last 5 days to herd it away back to Kalahandi but failed to spot it.
It may be noted that Budan Soura, a forest guard of Kantagaon panchayat under Tentulikhunti block in the district was also trampled to death by an elephant on July 10.
