Baripada: A man was reportedly stamped to death by a wild elephant in a weekly market in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj on Thursday.
As per reports, the incident occurred at Ambagadia village under Baisinga police station in the district. While the weekly market was crowded with customers coming from Ambagadia and adjoining villages in daytime, the tusker entered the area.
Panicked by the sight of the wild elephant, the villagers started running to save their lives. As panic spread and people started shouting, the elephant ran amok across the market area.
Repa Singh of Ambagadia also tried to save himself and hid himself near a motorcycle. The panicked tusker stamped on the motorcycle and Singh was pressed under the motorcycle.
After the elephant left, the villagers picked up the damaged bike and found Singh dead. They suspected that the elephant might have wandered into the village from nearby forest under Betanati range. The villagers have demanded compensation for the family of Singh who worked as a mason and was the sole earning member.
