Balangir: Police on Monday arrested Patnagarh BJD MLA Saroj Meher for allegedly humiliating PWD junior engineer Jayakant Sabar in public.
Patnagarh police had picked Meher from a hotel in Nuapada at about 10 pm on Sunday and brought him to Balangir. After a marathon grilling by SP (Balangir) K Siva Subramani, he was arrested and taken to Patnagarh and produced in the court of the Additional District Judge (ADJ) after a health check-up conducted by Dr Hemant Meher at the Patnagarh police station.
The court later remanded him to the Patnagarh sub-jail after rejecting his bail plea.
The court directed the police to produce Meher on July 1 to hear his bail petition.
Of the three cases registered against Meher, the court remanded Meher to the jail on the basis of the case under Section 3 of the SC and ST Atrocities Act, 2015.

Notably, the police had registered case against Meher following a complaint lodged by the Sabar’s wife. The MLA had allegedly forced him to do sit-ups and directed the executive engineer to slap him in public at Belapada in Balangir district.
