Sambalpur: Police on Tuesday detained four youths for their alleged link to the murders of two members of a family at a village in Sambalpur district.
Police suspect the double murder at Talipada in the Dangarpada panchayat area near Jujumara on Monday night was a fallout of a dispute triggered by an incident of eve teasing.
SP (Sambalpur) Kanwar Vishal Singh told the media: “We have detained four youths including the prime accused. We have formed three teams to nab the remaining accused who are absconding.”
According to reports, some youths of Talipada had passed lewd comments on a girl on Sunday evening. Following the incident, the girl’s family members went to their house and created a ruckus. But the accused youths were absent at that time.
In a bid to take revenge on the girl’s family, the youths assembled on the outskirts of Talipada with sharp weapons. Around 7 pm, five members of the girl’s family went to Talipada to talk with the youths. But they had a heated exchange of words and the youths then stabbed them. As the injured family members tried to escape, the youths caught them and severed their legs. Two of the victims, Shakti Bhusan Kumara and his brother Arabinda Kumara, died on the spot. Two others, Bibhuti Bhusan Kumara and Nandalal Bhue, were rushed to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in critical condition.
Following information, a police team from Jujumara led by the Sadar SDPO went to the village around 11 pm for investigation.
The post-mortem of the deceased will be conducted at the district headquarters hospital on Tuesday, police said.
