Bhubaneswar: Hours after his arrest by the CBI from his residence in Cuttack, former honourary secretary of the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA), Asirbad Behera was remanded to judicial custody on Thursday.
After arresting Behera and Kamalakanta Das, representative of Hotel Solan Inn (Bhubaneswar), officials of the central investigating team brought them to the CBI office in Bhubaneswar for interrogation and later produced them in the court of the Special Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), dealing with the CBI cases after conducting their medical test.
The court later remanded them to the judicial custody after rejecting their bail plea.
CBI had filed a supplementary charge-sheet against Behera, Das, Sambit Kumar Khuntia, (director of the AT Group of Companies) along with the OCA in the Special CJM Court on August 27 this year under relevant sections of IPC and Prize Chits & Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act,1978 etc in an ongoing investigation in the AT Chit Fund case.
However, CBI had mentioned in the charge-sheet that Sambit Kumar Khuntia was earlier granted bail by the Orissa High Court on November 11, 2016, after his arrest.
In response to the charge-sheet, the Special CJM Court September 17 had issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) for their arrest and directed the CBI to execute its order on or before September 20. On the strength of the NBW, the CBI arrested Behera and Das on Thursday.
