Mumbai: Mumbai Police arrested a man from West Bengal for allegedly making extortion calls and sending threatening videos to comedian Kapil Sharma and his PA.
The accused, 45-year-old Dilip Choudhary, was apprehended by Crime Branch officials on the charge of issuing threats in the name of gangsters Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar and demanding Rs 1 crore from the comedian-actor.
Kapil received seven phone calls from the accused, Hindustan Times reported quoting police officials.
Choudhary has been sent to police custody till September 30.
Police are trying to ascertain whether the accused actually has any direct or indirect link with the notorious gangsters or used their names to instil fear and extort money.
MNS issues warning to ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has issued a warning to ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ after Kapil’s Netflix show referred to Mumbai as ‘Bombay’, the old name for the city.
MNS leader Ameya Khopkar, who heads the party’s film wing, took to social media to issue a ‘request-cum-warning’ to the makers of the show.
“Even though 30 years have passed since Bombay was officially renamed Mumbai, the term Bombay is still frequently used in Bollywood’s Kapil Sharma Show celebrity guests, Delhi-based Rajya Sabha MPs, show anchors, and in many Hindi films. It was officially recognised by the Maharashtra Government in 1995 and by the Central Government in 1996, even before Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. Therefore, a humble request-cum-warning is being issued to respect this and use the name Mumbai,” wrote Khopkar.
