Bhubaneswar: In a rare gesture of humanitarian spirit, family members of the elderly couple crushed to death by a truck near Palasuni Chhak in Odisha capital, donated the couple’s eyes on Friday.
The couple’s sons said it was their parent’s wish.
The deceased couple, Umesh Panigrahi (67) and Nalini (61), were from Anandapur under Subalaya police limits in Biramaharajpur sub-division of Odisha’s Soneput district.
According to sources, the couple was on Thursday on way to Puri for a darshan of Lord Jagannath for their 39th wedding anniversary. They were run over by a truck while crossing the road near Palasuni Chhak.
While the woman’s body was found lying on the road, the man’s body was dragged by the truck and later found on the national highway near Satya Vihar, one kilometer from the accident site.
It is pertinent to mention here that locals have been demanding a foot-over-bridge at the Palasuni Chhaka but their demand is yet to be paid heed. Many accidents have been reported at the Palasuni Chhak in the last one year.
