New Delhi: Amid buzz that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering appointing Gautam Gambhir as the next coach of Team India, a report of the former India opener being offered a blank cheque by Kolkata Knight Riders franchise co-owner Shah Rukh Khan has resurfaced.
Gambhir, who was roped in by Lucknow Super Giants as its mentor in 2022, was reportedly offered a blank cheque by Shah Rukh to be with KKR for 10 years, NDTV reported.
Gambhir led KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. The men in purple have not won the prestigious T20 league since then, and Shah Rukh was keen to have him back.
He made the move at the start of this year’s season, and under him as the mentor, KKR have stormed into the final where they will face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday evening at Chennai.
There has been non word from either SRK or Gambhir on the 10-year offer. However, if Gambhir does become the national team’s coach, he may not be able to take up SRK’s offer.
Gambhir, the BJP MP from East Delhi, quit from politics early this year, is learnt to be interested in the India head coach job, but wants a guarantee over his selection before applying for the role.
