Baghdad: An arrest warrant has been issued for outgoing US President Donald Trump.
No, it’s not for his role in inciting supporters to lay siege on Capitol Hill in Washington two days ago. The warrant was issued by Iraq’s judiciary, related to the killing of an Iranian general and a powerful Iraqi militia leader last year.
A judge in Baghdad’s investigative court, probing the US-directed drone strike that killed Gen. Qassim Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in January 2020, issued the arrest warrant on Thursday.
Trump has been charged with premeditated murder, which carries death penalty on conviction.
It is more of a symbolic order against Trump, as it’s highly improbable that it will be carried out.
Iran had earlier issued a similar arrest warrant against Trump and sought Interpol’s assistance to detain him.
