Balasore: In a shocking incident, a female B.Ed. student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College reportedly attempted self-immolation over alleged harassment and inaction on her complaints.
As per information, the student sustained 90 per cent burn injuries after she tried to immolate self in front of the college principal’s chamber on Friday.
The student, identified as Soumyashree, was initially rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) at Balasore and later referred to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.
As per her friends, Soumyashree had been under severe mental stress for the past several days due to alleged harassment by the Head of the department. She was allegedly threatened and warned of academic consequences if she failed to comply with his demands.
Though the student lodged formal complaints with the college principal and the local police, no substantial action was reportedly taken. Her repeated appeals for justice, including protests against the inaction, went unheard.
Another friend of Soumyashree claimed that she took the extreme step shortly after a meeting with the college principal earlier in the day. A male student who tried to rescue her also sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment.
