Sonepur: Allegations of baby swapping surfaced at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in the district on Wednesday.
A woman, Banita Jhankar of Gandapali village under Ulunda block was rushed to the DHH on December 24 for delivery. According to her husband Bisikesan, the hospital had informed her that she had delivered a male child. However, they handed over a girl to them after some time, he said.
“The hospital staff initially told us that my wife had delivered a baby boy but after some time, they handed over a baby girl. I want an inquiry into the matter.”
Banita’s mother Tebha Mahalik said, “the nurses told them that Banita had delivered a baby boy. Later, they told us that it was a girl.” The family is now confused if the baby was a girl or a boy and why were they initially informed that she gave birth to a boy.”
While the family members informed police about the alleged exchange of newborns at the hospital. However, the hospital authorities claim that they have not received any complaint in this regard.
Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) in-charge, Dr Ramesh Chandra Swain said, “We have not received any such complaint yet. However, if we come across any allegation, the matter will be inquired into.”
Meanwhile, the police reached the hospital in the afternoon and inquired into the incident. Further investigation is on.
