Farmers’ Protest: Railways To Refund Over 12K Passengers
Indian Railways will refund all 12,300 passengers who couldn’t travel due to farmers’ protest from August 20-23.
The Ferozepur railway division in Punjab said a sum of Rs 53.65 lakh will be refunded to every passenger who couldn’t undertake scheduled journey during the four-day period for no fault of their own.
Farmers blocked railway tracks and a national highway over the weekend, over their demand of a hike in sugarcane prices.
According to railway officials, as many as 89 trains had to be cancelled because of the protest. There was a heavy rush as many had planned to visit siblings for the festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Vehicular traffic was also affected.
Farmers on Friday launched the agitation for an indefinite period to persuade the state government to accept their demands over dues of sugarcane and hike in cane prices.
