Carcasses Of Female Elephant & Calf: Autopsy Confirms Death By Arrow Attack In Odisha’s Keonjhar

Keonjhar: The female elephant and a calf, whose carcasses were found inside the Kalapat reserve forest under Telkoi forest range in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, died of arrow attack.

According to sources, a broken arrow was recovered during the autopsy from the body of the 25-year-old female elephant, which had pierced through its stomach and hit the uterus.

As a result, the female elephant delivered a dead calf. It had died in the womb.

It is pertinent to mention that some locals after spotting the carcasses in the forest near Kuliapal on Monday immediately informed the Forest department. On being informed by the team, Telkoi Ranger Shivaji Mohan Rao and Keonjhar DFO Dhamdhere Dhanraj Hanumant went to the spot.

Despite huge funds poured into the protection of elephants, those engaged in monitoring the movement of elephants had not been able to detect the foul smell while patrolling, said sources.
