New Delhi/Moscow: Hosts Russia started off their World Cup campaign with a thumping 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the opener of the FIFA World Cup 2018 at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on Thursday.
Denis Cheryshev scored a brace to help his team win the match. The opening goal of the match and the tournament was scored by Iury Gazinsk. After a goal by Cheryshev, Artem Dzyuba netted the third in the 71st minute. The fourth goal was added by Cheryshev before Golovin netted the final goal through a free-kick during the injury time.
While Russia had 60 per cent of ball possession and three corners, Saudi Arabia only had 40 per cent possession and two corners.
Denis Cheryshev was declared man of the match.
