Bhubaneswar: Panic gripped patients after a fire broke out on the fifth floor of the Apollo Hospitals near Gajapati Nagar here on Saturday morning.
According to sources, some attendants noticed thick smoke billowing out of a room on the fifth floor of the hospital at around 11 am and informed the hospital authorities.
Following information, two fire brigades rushed to the spot and doused the flames.
As informed by the hospital authorities, the fire erupted in the battery room near an ICU unit on the fifth floor due to a short-circuit.
They also confirmed that there was no casualties or injuries.
“We have evacuated the patients through the emergency doors and shifted 21 patients admitted in three ICUs to other private hospitals in the city. Since there is no outlet to release the smoke on the fifth floor, we had to break te window panes,” they informed.
Following the incident, Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty and DCP Anup Sahu and senior Fire officers arrived at the hospital.
Talking to mediapesons, the Police Commissioner said while the Apollo Hospital authorities will probe the cause of the fire, the State Police will also probe whether the Hospital abide by the fire safety protocol. “We will also want to know whether there is regular fire audit in the hospital,” he pointed out.
