Fireballs Thrown At Elephants In Odisha: Axe Falls On 2 Contractual Staffers Of Forest Dept

Bhubaneswar: The Forest Department has dismissed two contractual employees in connection with the horrifying incident of fireballs being thrown at elephants in Karanjia of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.

Deepak Munda and Bapi Majh have been sacked and they left the area soon after being dismissed, Dudhiani Forest Range Officer Pradeep Prusty informed on Sunday.

According to sources, the duo along with a group of villagers threw fireballs to drive away an elephant herd in Dumurdiha village under the Dudhiani range of the division. Divisional forest officer of Karanjia, Srikant Naik ordered a probe into the incident on July 27 after a video, which had gone viral, showed one fireball hitting an elephant and spreading to its body burning the hair and skin. He had warned of stern action against the person responsible for indulging in such unlawful activities.
