Bhubaneswar: Undeterred by rain and humidity, devotees traversed miles on foot, carrying small pots of water attached to a beautifully decorated bamboo pole on their shoulders, amid chats of ‘Bol Bam’ to offer Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva at temples across Odisha on July 14, marking the first Monday of the holy month of Shraavana.
Long queues were seen at major Shiva shrines, including Shree Lingaraja Temple in Bhubaneswar, Dhabaleswar Temple in Cuttack, Lokanath Temple in Puri and Akhandalamani Temple in Bhadrak early this morning.
The district administrations have made elaborate arrangements at water bodies and Shiva temples across the state to ensure the safety and security of the devotees. Makeshift tents have been put up along the road where devotees can rest on their way.
The Twin City Commissionerate Police have deployed police personnel in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to maintain order and assist devotees.
In Cuttack, guidelines have been issued for devotees to fetch water only from Gadagadia Ghat at Mahanadi river. “We also deployed ODRAF and fire personnel for emergencies. We put up steel barricades, temporary toilets, and changing rooms for the convenience of devotees,” Cuttack Mayor Subash Singh told the media.
Devotees have been cautioned against entering deep waters while collecting water for the rituals. Powerboats, lifejackets, rope lines and portable lighting systems have been stationed at vulnerable spots along riverbanks to prevent any eventualities.
