Baripada: Forest officials on Thursday rescued a fishing cat was rescued from a canal near a village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
According to sources, some villagers of Kanialuka village under Deuli range of Baripada forest division spotted the fishing cat in a canal near their village and informed the Forest department.
A team of Forest officials, led by ACF Rabi Narayan Mohanty from Baripada forest division office went to the spot. A wildlife rescue team accompanying them rescued the wild cat from the cat.
After checking its condition, the veterinarians said the cat was unharmed and in good condition. The Forest officials have decided to hand over the fishing cat to Nandankanan Zoo near Bhubaneswar.
They suspected that the cat might have strayed from Similipal Forest Reserve and came to the village in search of food. Regional Chief Conservator of Forest of Similipal, Prakash Chand Gogineni, was in talks with the Forest officials and Nandankanan authorities to hand over the fish cat, which is listed as vulnerable species.
