Mumbai: Five of a family, including 4 children, drowned after being swept away due to sudden strong flow of water amid heavy downpour at a waterfall near Bhushi Dam in Lonavala on Sunday afternoon.
The victims have been identified as Sahista Liyaqat Ansari (36), Amima Salman (13), Umera Salman (8), Adnan Ansari (4), and Maria Ansari (9). The family was from the Sayyed Nagar area of Hadapsar Wanwadi Pune.
The incident happened at around 12.30 pm when the family was out for a picnic at the scenic spot, “It seems they slipped into a waterfall some two kilometres away from Bhushi Dam and drowned at the reservoir downstream,” Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Pankaj Deshmukh was quoted as saying by PTI.

According to media reports, 10 family members were trapped in the water streams, while five of them managed to escape, five went missing. Bodies of the 36-year-old woman and two girls, aged 13 and 8, were later found in the backwater of Bhushi Dam in Lonavala. The search of the nine-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl resumed on Monday.
