New Delhi: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Monday that he was considering introducing a law mandating the use of Indian musical instrument sounds as vehicle horns, according to reports.

Gadkari said the aim is to make vehicle horns more pleasant by using sounds like those of the flute, tabla, violin, and harmonium, reported the India Today.

He stated this while speaking at an event. He also highlighted that the transport sector was responsible for 40% of the country’s air pollution, while speaking at the same event. The minister said the Modi government was actively promoting the adoption of green and biofuels such as methanol and ethanol for vehicles to combat pollution.

Gadkari stated that the country earns significant revenue from the export of two-wheelers and cars. The industry, valued at Rs 14 lakh crore in 2014, has now grown to Rs 22 lakh crore, he stated.

According to the minister, India has overtaken Japan to become the third-largest automobile market globally, trailing only the United States and China.

Meanwhile, the minister’s idea of introducing music as horns has evoked mixed reaction on social media, triggering a meme fest. Here are some of these memes:

“Nitin Gadkari floated the idea of flute, tabla, violin, harmonium sounds for vehicle horns.”
