Dhenkanal: The forest fire in different districts of Odisha, which was brought under control weeks back, has made a return. After the forest fire was spotted in some parts of Similipal in Mayurbhanj on March 31, it almost engulfed the campus of a women’s hostel in the town on Friday night.
According to sources, the fire that broke out in Charkhola forest spread to the hostel of Dhenkanal Autonomous College on the wee hours of Saturday. After finding the wild growth in the backyard of the hostel on fire at around 2 am, the inmates alerted the hostel superintendent.
The superintendent informed the principal of the autonomous college, Dr Rashmi Mishra. As there was no way they could extinguish the fast spreading fire, they called up the district administration officials who informed the Fire Brigade. The Fire personnel rushed to the spot and doused the fire.
In mid-March, a massive fire in Bega reserve forest under Sadangi forest range in Dhenkanal district had broken out destroying teak trees in around 100 acre.
On March 31, a satellite image released by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) showed outbreak of forest fire in 47 places in the southern division of the Similipal National Park.
